Controlling What We Can
Since the first reports of Covid 19 in the USA came out, a lot of our circumstances have felt beyond our control. Every day, the rules for what it is we can do seem to change. Even small trips across state lines--runs to stores or to visit family that we wouldn’t have thought twice about in February--trigger a massive cascade of what ifs. What if that state doesn’t allow travelers from mine? What if, when we get there, the state is added to my state’s quarantine list? What if there’s nowhere safe to visit outside? The list of things to dwell on that are completely outside our control grows and grows.
In times like this it can feel like there are only two options: panic, or accept that we’re completely helpless. But there is, actually, a third option: focusing on how you can best support yourself. What sets you up to thrive in times of high stress? This isn’t about judging yourself harshly for being stressed or for not feeling your best about your body. This is about what it means to really take care of yourself.
Supporting my sleep is one of the most important ways I take care of myself. What helps your sleep patterns is a little different for everybody, but going to bed at the same time (if your kids allow it) and trying not to use your phone in bed are two common tips. Do you have a calming down ritual you do before bed--lighting a candle, having a cup of hot tea, or meditating? If not, there’s really no time like the present to build one. You deserve good rest--and you’ll find it impacts the rest of your day.
For some people, sticking to a schedule during the day not only supports their eating and sleeping habits, but also helps them feel productive and powerful. When we’re in the house 24/7 it’s easy to let all our time bleed together. Do you have work hours and relaxing hours set out? Are you holding yourself to them?
What’s most important isn’t what I do or what I recommend--it’s what works for you. What have you tried so far--and really tried, not just thought about for a day and given up? What worked for you?
